Deforestation is one major factor. Deforestation is considered one of the main causes behind the greenhouse effect, as trees and other plants clean our atmosphere by removing carbon (in the form of carbon dioxide). Deforestation doesn't only reduce this natural cleaning effect, but the decay and burning of wood emits the carbon dioxide back in the air. Large scale deforestation caused by humans today is estimated to contribute to one-third of all carbon dioxide in the air.
